Strategic Planning Theme of the Refocused Leadership Day 2002

Thea Teich, Society first vice president, and Susan M Jensen, assistant to the president for leadership, organized this year's Leadership Day, held on May 5. Thea and Susan focused this year's Leadership Day on strategic planning—a theme they thought would appeal to a wider range of chapter and Society leaders. Leadership Day offered its traditional activities, such as networking sessions, chances for chapter and Society leaders to compare notes on chapter activities and issues, and the opportunity to hear outgoing president Judith L. Glick-Smith speak briefly and also introduce the 2002-2003 board of directors. Winners of STC's PR and newsletter competitions, as well as winners of the chapter achievement awards, were announced.

Some new offerings to Leadership Day also debuted. Edward J. See, incoming president, announced a new award: the Distinguished Special Interest Group award (DSSA). The DSSA will recognize exemplary dedication of an individual to a SIG. For DSSA information, download the guidelines from the STC Web site at http://www.stc.org/PDF_Files/Ad-106-02.pdf.

And for the first time ever, Leadership Day featured a keynote speaker. Mary V. Merrill of Merrill Associates in Columbus, Ohio, presented "Leading with a Plan: Strategic Planning for the Chapter Committee and SIG." Mary outlined challenges leaders will face in developing new strategic paradigms. After Mary's speech, Leadership Day attendees discussed strategic planning for their own chapters, SIGs, and committees. Issues they discussed ranged from strategies for recruiting and retaining members to efforts to develop corporate sponsorships and alliances with other organizations.
