Online Communication Competition:
Delivering Entries
Entering the Online competition is a great way to get professional
feedback about your work. A panel of STC judges, comprising your
peers, evaluates your entry and gives you detailed, written comments
based on a set of consistent standards. You might win an award,
too!
The Boston/Northern New England competition bases our judging on
the standards used by the International Online Communication Competition.
You can download a copy of the IOCC
judging criteria.
Please read the Deadline for Entries for the Online Communication
Competition in Dates
and Locations. All entries must be registered by this deadline.
If you pay by check, your entry fee must be postmarked by this
deadline. See Entry Fees
for more information.
If you haven't registered your entry, please see Registration.
Upon receipt of your registration, we will forward you more specific
information about the entry requirements, including specific dates
and times.
General Delivery Information
You must send us three copies of each entry, including those that are to
be judged via the Internet, on three separate CDs or DVDs. These must be
readable on computers running Windows XP or MacOS X, and be received three
weeks prior to consensus judging day (see Dates
and Locationsexact dates for Web judging to be announced).
Please label your media with the entry title, and include (on paper) all
necessary instructions for launching and using your entry. Also include
whether and to where you would like your media returned after the
competition. If you win a Distinguished award and decide to enter the International Online Communication Competition, we have to submit your three CDs to the International Online Communication Competition committee with your registration and payment.
Please mail entries to:

Entries to be judged on-site
If you plan to set up your entry onsite at Progress Software on competition day, note the following:
- You must provide one computer system for each entry.
- The STC is not responsible for the security of the hardware or software used for your entry.
- Plan to set up all software and hardware required to demonstrate your entry in the morning and to remove your equipment in the late afternoon. (Exact drop-off and pickup times to be announced.) Entrants are not to be present during judging.
- All entrants must provide three copies of each of their entries on CD. Label your CDs with the entry title only. We will collect the CDs at the sign-in table when you deliver your entry to the competition.
The reasons for this requirement are:
- If your entry is a candidate for Best of Show, or if judges are still reviewing your entry when you return to pick up your equipment, we will continue to evaluate your entry by CD.
- If you win a Distinguished award and decide to enter the International Online Communication Competition, we have to submit your three CDs to the International Online Communication Competition committee with your registration and payment.

Entries to be judged remotely
Entries that are Web sites must be available for judges to view at any
time for approximately three weeks prior to consensus judging day. These
must be viewable using Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape
Navigator.
As noted above, three copies of each entry on CD or DVD are
required for the following reasons:
- If your entry is a candidate for Best of Show, or if judges are still reviewing your entry when you return to pick up your equipment, we will continue to evaluate your entry by CD.
- If you win a Distinguished award and decide to enter the International Online Communication Competition, we have to submit your three CDs to the International Online Communication Competition committee with your registration and payment.

"Notes to Judges" section
In the "Notes to Judges" section of the registration
form, enter any information that will help judges to review your
entry. Please be brief (maximum 3,000 characters, or approximately
one page).
Examples of information judges will need:
- Background information that puts the judge in a real-life user's
shoes. Judges are probably unfamiliar with the product that your
entry documents, so if appropriate, provide some brief context.
- Instructions for using the hardware your entry is displayed
on, if necessary.
- Instructions for finding or launching your entry, if necessary.
(Remember that someone may inadvertently shut down the machine
and need to restart.)
- Unusual or noteworthy features that judges may overlook if you
don't point them out.
The "Notes to Judges" replaces the "Scenario" that some of you
may remember. For entries that will be judged on site, you may print
a page of additional instructions to leave next to your entry when
you set up on competition day.
